Literary essay: Wonder

August Pullman is an "ordinary kid with an extraordinary face". He lives his life with a deformed face that no one can get over. In the book Wonder R.J Palacio August or Auggie faces labels, and bullying. When transferring to his new school Beecher Prep, he goes through plain torture. But hiding his face doesn’t make the madness go away. He’s to be “ sheep in the slaughter.” He has to stand up for himself, and be proud of who he is no matter what type of humiliation he experiences. I think Wonder is really about being who you are and being proud of it.

Throughout the story, Auggie faces people who put labels on his back because of his face. For example, on page 119, it says in summer’s words "Some kids ask have actually come out and asked me why I hang out with 'the freak' so much." This shows that people put labels on you just because of how you look. Everyone is too busy seeing what people look like and not what they are like. But just because they label you, don't feel like its true, you should be proud of whom you are, and know who you are.

Also in the story, he faces bullying because of how he looks. In the book on page 266 the boy Eddie and his friends say " I don't think you want to mess with me, you ugly freak." Not only was Eddie bullying Auggie, he pushed Jack to the ground hard. This shows that Eddie was only messing them because Auggie has a different face and Jack was friends with him. If Auggie had a regular face he probably wouldn't have to go through half of what he really went through.

By the end of the story, Auggie has overcome the bullying and labels. On page 304 Mr.Tushman gives a speech about the person who received the award for Henry Ward Beecher medal and says “so will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award?" This shows that people saw Auggie and his character. He did not fight back with fists. And he didn't let people get to him. He knew he had to be strong because there was going to be people who teased, bullied, humiliated, and hurt him.

literary essay brown girl dreaming

Jacqueline Woodson has gone through it all. From Jim Crow to Free New York, kids teasing her about her religion, disconnecting from her father. She learns to balance her life and grab on and let go of things. But she has to know what to let go of and what to grab on to. As a kid I would think that is tough. The theme is to balance your life.

On page 68 her brother Hope is slapped with a switch on the leg because he has adapted to the south. For example, the books says " The first time my brother says ain't my mother pulls a branch from the willow tree growing down the hill at the edge of our backyard". This shows that they are getting used to the south and how it is. But their mother doesn't want them to get too comfy. This shows that jackie and her siblings love the south and want to keep it in their memories.

AHW 1/14/15

Why doesn't Sam just leave the dude alone? He obviously isn't into green eggs and ham.
Why do the Maze Runners go back into the maze? apparently they WANT to get stung.
Why did the girl go in the closet? Has she learned nothing from the other movies?!
These are people or things which I call NON LEARNERS!!!!! Everyone before them has made a bad mistake. the goal is to learn from it. And according to Sam, Maze Runners, and the clueless girl, LEARNING FROM MISTAKES IS LIKE SOOOO LAST YEAR!!!

selma

i went to go see the movie selma. it was a good movie. it was about Martin Luther King and how he marched. it made me mad. How anyone could do that to another person. its as bad as cannibalism if you ask me. but what really made me mad was that someone can say those mean things to other people. I bet they don't even know what they're saying. they just heard it and lived with it and so they think it's ok.

Auggie is proud of who he is. And because of that, he ended 5th grade with an award, and lots of friends that appreciate him for who he is. In the beginning of the book, everyone was " anti- Auggie". But they didn't see who he really was and now they do. He is proud of who he is.

The poop

The poop say there. In the cage. And I had to pick it up. Lucy may have been a 3 month year old guinea pig, but she pooped a lot! And everyday I had to pick up as much pee stained litter and poop that could for in a little doggie bag. One day while in the middle of the poop and pee cleaning, as I reached out with my glove covered hands, Lucy jumped up and straight into the bag! She squirmed and swirled until I grabbed her under the belly, and that's when it started feeling little marbels plopping in my hands.
" this is not... REALLY?!?!" I shouted
